Airport Transit Visa for Belgium

Overview

The Belgium Airport Transit Visa (Type A) allows non-UK citizens residing in the UK to transit through a Belgian airport on their way to a non-Schengen destination. This visa is required only for certain nationalities who do not qualify for visa-free airport transit. 

Airport Transit Visa is required if:

  • Your final destination is within the Schengen Area.
  • You need to pick up luggage or check in again (confirm with your airline).
  • You must pass through passport control (confirm with your airline).
  • You are transiting through multiple Schengen airports (e.g., London-Brussels-Paris-Lagos).
  • You do not hold a confirmed onward airline ticket.
  • You hold a UK visa issued overseas instead of a British Residence Permit (BRP).

 Eligibility

  • Applicants without a valid British Residence Permit (BRP) must check whether their nationality requires an airport transit visa.
  • Transit must be through a Belgian airport only, without entering the Schengen Area.
  • Applicants must provide proof of confirmed onward travel and a valid visa for their final destination, if required.

Processing Time

Visa processing times may vary. It is advisable to apply at least four weeks before your planned travel date to allow for document verification and processing.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • A duly completed and signed VisaOnWeb application form with a barcode.

Passport

  • Valid for at least three months beyond the departure date from the Schengen area.
  • Issued within the last 10 years.
  • Must contain two blank pages for visa stamps.

Passport Copy

  • Photocopy of the passport bio-page showing personal details and photo.

Photographs

  • Two UK passport-sized photos (3.5cm x 4.5cm).
  • Colour photos with a plain white background.
  • Must be less than three months old.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Flight Tickets

  • Original or copy of the confirmed flight itinerary, showing transit via a Belgian airport.
  • If returning via Belgium, tickets for both inbound and outbound journeys must be provided.

Visa or Entry Permit for Final Destination

  • Original and copy of a valid visa or residence permit for the final destination country.

You may be exempt from an Airport Transit Visa if you:

  • Hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen state.
  • Hold a valid visa for an EU/EEA Member State, Canada, Japan, or the United States.
  • Hold a valid residence permit issued by an EU/EEA Member State.
  • Hold a valid residence permit from Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino, or the United States that guarantees unrestricted right of return.
  • Are a family member of an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen.
  • Hold a diplomatic passport.
  • Are a flight crew member of a contracting party to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

Important Notes

  • All documents must be in English, French, Dutch, or German. Foreign official documents must be legalised or carry an apostille unless exempted by treaty.
  • Submission of all required documents does not guarantee visa approval.
  • Additional documents may be requested by the Belgian authorities if necessary.
