Belgium Cohabitation Visa

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

The Belgium Cohabitation Visa is designed for non-EU nationals who wish to cohabit with a Belgian citizen, an EU citizen, or a foreign national residing in Belgium for more than 90 days. The visa category depends on the applicant’s relationship with the person they are joining:

  1. Cohabitation with an EU Citizen
    • If the EU citizen has exercised their right of free movement, the applicant must apply for a Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa.
    • If the applicant is visa-exempt, the cohabitation process must be completed directly in Belgium at the local town hall.
  2. Cohabitation with a Belgian Citizen or a Non-EU Foreign National
    • For applicants intending to settle in Belgium for more than 90 days.
    • Requires proof of a stable, long-term relationshipand financial security.

Important Notice:

  • Two identical sets of documents (original + copies) must be submitted.
  • Foreign official documents must be legalized or apostilled unless exempted by treaty.
  • The Embassy may request additional documents.

Processing Time

Processing times depend on administrative verification. It is recommended to apply at least 8-12 weeks in advance to avoid delays.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • Two duly completed and signed VisaOnWeb application forms with a barcode.

Photographs

  • Four UK passport-sized photos (3.5cm x 4.5cm).
  • Colour photos with a plain white background.
  • Must be less than three months old.

Passport

  • Valid for at least 12 months from the date of visa issuance.
  • Issued within the last 10 years.
  • Must contain two blank pages side by side.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Supporting Documents Based on Cohabitation

1. Cohabitation with an EU Citizen

Additional Required Documents:

  • Copy of the ID or passport of the EU citizen.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means of the EU citizen.
  • Proof of accommodation in Belgium.

Important: If you are visa-exempt, you must apply directly in Belgium at the local town hall instead of applying for a visa.

2. Cohabitation with a Belgian Citizen or a Non-EU Foreigner

Additional Required Documents:

  • Proof of Relationship Stability:
    • Legal cohabitation for at least one year before the visa application.
    • Known each other for at least two years, proving regular contact via phone, email, or mail, and having met three times over two years for a total of at least 45 days.
    • A child together.
  • Proof of Single Status (Certificate of Celibacy):
    • If issued outside the EU or UK, it must be legalized/apostilled.
    • UK applicants must provide an apostilled statutory declaration via a solicitor/notary.
  • Copy of the Belgian ID or residence permit of the foreigner being joined.
  • Proof of sufficient accommodation.
  • Proof of stable and regular income to support the applicant.
  • Proof of Belgian medical insurance and social security.
  • Certificate of Good Conduct (ACRO/Police Certificate), legalized if required.
  • Medical Certificate from a Belgian Embassy-approved doctor.

Additional Notes

  • All documents must be in English, French, Dutch, or German.
  • If documents are missing, the applicant has 30 days to submit them.
  • Submission of documents does not guarantee visa approval.
  • The Embassy may request additional supporting documents.
