Belgium Internship & Training Visa

Overview

The Belgium Internship & Training Visa allows non-EU nationals, including UK residents, to undertake long-term internships, training programs, or placements in Belgium for more than 90 days. This visa applies to individuals participating in:

  • Internships with the European Parliament or European Commission
  • Internships or professional training at Belgian companies or international organizations

Applicants must obtain prior authorization, and the employer or host organization in Belgium must initiate the work permit application before the visa application process begins.

Important Notice:

  • A single permit systemapplies, combining the work and residence permit in one process.
  • The employer must apply for authorizationat the regional office in Belgium before the visa application.
  • Two identical sets of documents(original + copies) must be submitted.
  • Certain internship categories may be exemptfrom the single permit process.

Processing Time

Processing times vary based on employer authorization and administrative review. It is recommended to apply at least 8-12 weeks in advance to avoid delays.

Documents Required

Visa Application Form

  • Two duly completed and signed VisaOnWeb application forms with barcodes.

Photographs

  • Four UK passport-sized photos (3.5cm x 4.5cm).
  • Colour photos with a plain white background.
  • Must be less than three months old.

Passport

  • Valid for at least 12 months from the date of visa issuance.
  • Issued within the last 10 years.
  • Must contain two blank pages side by side.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Annex 46 (Single Permit Authorization)

  • Two copies of the authorization letter issued by Belgian authorities confirming work and residence approval.

Internship with the EU Parliament or European Commission

Internship Confirmation Letter

  • Issued by the Traineeship Office of the European Commission or European Parliament.
  • Must state internship duration, salary (if applicable), and financial support details.

Proof of Finance

  • Bank statements or financial documents demonstrating sufficient funds to support living expenses.

Criminal Record Check

  • Original and a copy of an ACRO/Police Certificate, covering at least the last year.
  • Must be legalised if required.

Medical Certificate

  • Original and a copy issued by a Belgian Embassy-approved doctor in London.

Internship or Training at a Belgian Company or Organisation

Training Contract / Internship Agreement

  • Official agreement signed between the intern and the host company/organisation in Belgium.
  • Must state internship duration, responsibilities, and financial arrangements.

Annex 46 (Single Permit Authorization)

  • Required for internships longer than 90 days.
  • Authorization must be granted before applying for the visa.

Criminal Record Check

  • Original and a copy of an ACRO/Police Certificate, covering at least the last year.
  • Must be legalised if required.

Medical Certificate

  • Original and a copy issued by a Belgian Embassy-approved doctor in London.

Additional Supporting Documents

Medical and Travel Insurance

  • Must cover medical expenses, hospital costs, and repatriation.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000.
  • Valid for the entire stay in Belgium.

Proof of Return Travel

  • A confirmed ticket out of Belgium or proof of sufficient funds to purchase one (e.g., a credit card statement).

Important Notes

  • All documents must be in English, French, Dutch, or German. Foreign official documents must be legalised or carry an apostille unless exempted by treaty.
  • The submission of documents does not guarantee visa approval.
  • Additional documents may be requested by the Belgian authorities if necessary.
